Interview TSGS Russell Lee

Do you believe in ghosts? What about aliens and UFOs? Are some ghosts more powerful than others? Helmi meets Russell Lee, the bestselling horror author of True Singapore Ghost Stories, to ask him what he knows about ghosts.

Greetings. 29.01.2015

When compassion is present, we do not overlook others’ pain. Rather, there is a sense of urgency to end that pain, as if a fire has just been lit underneath you. When you have such compassion, as soon as you see suffering, you wish to jump up and act to end it at once. You have no fear and no hesitation in taking on the suffering of other people, animals, and even the planet itself. This is what I would call the right kind of fearlessness. This is the fearlessness of true heroes.

SE in Tampines Popular

Heard that the SE edition arrived in Damai and it was the last copy in Tampines Popular, according to a fan.

Wax museum

9 extraordinary Singaporeans who should feature in Madame Tussauds Singapore.

So the world-renowned Madame Tussauds will be opening on sunny Sentosa in the second half of next year.

And lo and behold, Singapore will be the seventh (Gasp! Seventh in class! Seventh!) Asian city – after Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Wuhan, Shanghai and Beijing (slated to open early next year) – to house the wax museum.

I always thought that Singapore is the obvious choice; we are the air-conditioned nation, which means the wax figures won’t melt despite the sweltering heat.

Or maybe we are just too mainstream.

So while Merlin Entertainments (owner of Madame Tussauds) mull over who are the obvious famous people who have “had a hand in shaping Singapore” and with Mr Lee Kuan Yew already a shoo-in, here are 9 other extraordinary Singaporeans who should be immortalised in the wax museum.

Okay, I’m not sure whether he’s Singaporean since he’s always covered up from head to toe but he’s the author of The True Singapore Ghost Stories, one of the best-selling series in Singapore and that means the (nether) world to many 80s babies. Raising hell and scaring young and impressionable teenagers witless since 1989 – not bad.

Foxy dress as up Russell Lee

Some time ago, TSGS Fan Club Admin Jing Wen asked this guy, Foxy the Pirate Fox to do this dare. Every day, Foxy can do a Q&A session, Truth or Dare, or even both with special guest stars sometimes. She asked foxy to dress up as Russell a few times and finally came up with this one. No offence intended, it's made purely for fun . If you wanna know about the real Foxy the Pirate Fox, you can research about him yrself! Thank You.

Reviews from Readers

Megan Foo: " The first thing that hit me was the chills that ran down my spine as I thought about Russell Lee's appearance and identity. Who could he be? The high level of secrecy that Russell uses for his identity adds on to the spookiness of the compilation of the Singapore Ghost Story Series - who knows if the ghosts are part of his minions doing his work?

Just kidding, but even then, I love the idea of the compilation of true (although sometimes dubious) Singapore Ghost Stories, which was a really ingenious thing to do. The series were always engaging for me, and I would sit at popular reading some while waiting for my mom to choose her cookbooks. When I couldn't finish the book, I would just buy it home to read it.

I especially loved the feature story in each book. While some of them left me incredulously amused, others scared me out of my wits, leaving me walking home at a faster pace than before lest I turn around and bring home a ghost of me.

Farizzulhilmi : "Russell lee does well in covering up his identity by remaining masked whenever he is in public promoting his books. I remember growing up reading his 'True Singapore ghost stories' series which is a compilation of all the scary tales the readers of TSGS have experienced and quite frankly, there was never an episode that i've hated. I enjoyed every single book! "

The stories are engaging and the book clear and concise grammar, helping me improve my grasp of the English language. He also offers his expert opinion on some of the stories and this gives the readers more depth in understanding the stories being told.

During the book signing sessions, Russell Lee is very friendly and outgoing and his warm personality is just an icing to the cake to his fantastic ghost story series."

Jian Qiang :" Russell Lee is an enigma unto himself. Dressed in black from head to toe, no one has ever seen him unmasked before. He could be anyone in the street, a guy buying from Old Chang Kee across the road or even the respectable middle age guy sitting beside me on the MRT as I type this.

His signature creation, the True Singapore Ghost Story series, is well loved by people of all ages not only in Singapore but throughout the whole of Southeast Asia as well. It is what I would call a people's book, written by the masses, contributed by the masses. Almost all of the books are primarily real life accounts from individuals all over Southeast Asia, though occasionally Russell Lee will publish his research or interviews with guest stars such as Maia Lee.

Not only are the accounts engaging, but they most often carry a moral end-to-the-story lesson as well. It was all I could do to put the book down and not procrastinate with the tasks I'm doing. Sometimes, I'm really touched by love stories through spiritual dimensions, or angry with traitorous sons who kill their parents for their wealth. Moreover, the moderation by Russell at the end of each story provides his own insight as a paranormal expert on the account too.

Overall, a really good series by a really good creator!

Serries True Singapore Ghost Stories

This popular series of books by Russell Lee is about the collection of true ghost stories from Singapore as well as the neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. This books gives you some insights on the unique paranormal scene in this part of Southeast Asia and how they affect the culture and the lives of the people. As some of you might be aware of that Asia has a unique culture with some having a touch of mystics and supernatural to them.

If you want to know more about the famous ghosts in Southeast Asia ..read these books and you'll find a lot about them in the stories. The book uses first person narration which gives the stories a more "true story" look. Overall this book is a pleasure to read and a perfect reading when you're just relaxing on the couch to pass the time. But just be sure to read the book on daytime unless you're brave enough to imagine what you're not suppose to be imagining. Beware!

Remember to buy the original one with the "Angsana Books" imprinted on the front cover.
